Generic medications have the same active ingredient (medicinal molecules) as the brand name drug, but the non‑medicinal ingredients can be different.
If your pharmacist offers you a generic drug you can still choose the brand name. Just tell them you would like your prescription filled with the brand name and refer to the drug by name.
Your doctor can ensure you receive the brand name drug by writing "no substitution" on the prescription. If your doctor writes "no substitution" on your prescription, the pharmacist is required to give you the brand name drug. (Not Applicable in Quebec).
